The Apollo Society - Hawaii Space Grant Fellowship Award

To encourage and support research and study to meet the scientific, engineering and social challenges of human presence in space and the establishment of human communities beyond Earth, The Apollo Society, in collaboration with the Hawaii Space Grant Consortium, offers the "The Apollo Society-Hawaii Space Grant Fellowship Award " to those undergraduate students at the University of Hawaii at Manoa and the University of Hawaii at Hilo who propose to do research and study toward solving scientific, engineering or social problems related to human presence in space. Special consideration will be given to proposals for research on the establishment of human communities beyond Earth.

Examples of appropriate research areas could include, but are not limited to;

  • extraterrestrial resource utilization,
  • space habitat design and construction,
  • dynamics of small groups living in close quarters, or
  • econonomic sustainability of an off-Earth community.
*

The Apollo Society-Hawaii Space Grant Fellows are expected to work between 10 and 15 hours per week toward the accomplishment of their proposed research or study project.

The Apollo Society-Hawaii Space Grant Fellows will receive a stipend of $3000 per semester and up to $500 for travel/supplies. (In previous semesters, travel funds have been used for activities including observing runs at the Mauna Kea telescopes and for travel to national meetings to present project results.)

The level of support provided to The Apollo Society-Hawaii Space Grant Fellowship awardees is identical to that of a regular Hawaii Space Grant Fellowship Award. Applicants for The Apollo Society-Hawaii Space Grant Fellowship Award will also receive full consideration for a regular Hawaii Space Grant Fellowship Award.

Awards will be based largely on academic qualifications and the quality of proposed research or study. Applicants must also ensure that their proposed research is feasible within the proposed academic time-frame.
