State of Hawaii

Proclamation

WHEREAS, the first manned landing on the Moon was one of the greatest accomplishments of human history; and

WHEREAS, the instinct to explore that drives people to the Moon and beyond is the same instinct that impelled early Polynesian voyagers to explore and settle in what would become Hawaii; and

WHEREAS, the peaceful exploration of space has brought many great discoveries and benefits to humanity; and

WHEREAS, individuals and organizations throughout Hawaii -- including The Apollo Society, the Hawaii Space Society, the Hawaiian Astronomical Society, the Hawaii Young Astronauts, the Pacific Regional Planetary Data Center, the Pacific Aerospace Museum and the Bishop Museum Planetarium -- will commemorate the twenty-seventh anniversary of Apollo 11's mission to the Moon from July 16 to 24, 1996; and

WHEREAS, through these observances, awareness of the great discoveries, benefits and opportunities related to space exploration will be fostered among the people of Hawaii;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, BENJAMIN J. CAYETANO, Governor of the State of Hawaii, do hereby proclaim July 16 through July 24, 1996, to be

SPACEWEEK

in Hawaii, and also proclaim July 20, 1996, to be

SPACE EXPLORATION DAY

in Hawaii, and invite our people to celebrate the great achievement of Apollo 11 and consider the many benefits that further space exploration can provide our world.
